Can I add a thermal scan to my termite inspection?

Yes. A thermal scan can be added to a visual termite inspection or a pre-purchase termite inspection in Darwin and Palmerston. Get in touch with Northern Rock or call (08) 8931 2254, and we’ll talk through whether your property is one where it’s worth adding.

Does thermal imaging detect termites?

No, and any company telling you otherwise is overselling it. A thermal camera measures surface temperature. At Northern Rock Pest Control we use it to highlight areas that warrant closer investigation, most often cooler spots where timber is holding moisture, but the camera doesn’t identify what’s causing them. That’s the technician’s job, using the anomaly as a starting point and confirming with further investigation.

Can a thermal camera see through walls?

No. A thermal camera reads the temperature of the surface it’s pointed at, and no camera sees through a wall. What it picks up is how conditions behind the surface, such as moisture, change the temperature of the surface itself. Northern Rock’s technicians use that as a guide to where to look more closely.

Is thermal imaging included in a standard termite inspection?

No. At Northern Rock Pest Control, a thermal scan is a separate service carried out alongside a full visual termite inspection. We use it where it’s genuinely useful: high-risk properties, following up something found during an inspection, homes with previous termite activity, and before-and-after treatment comparisons. Our prices are on the pricing page.

How should I prepare my home for a thermal scan?

Turn the air-conditioning on before the technician arrives. Thermal imaging relies on temperature differences, and a cool house against Darwin’s outside heat gives a much bigger contrast than you’d get down south, so anything reading differently stands out more clearly. Northern Rock normally asks customers to do this before a scan.

What does a before-and-after thermal scan tell me?

Northern Rock scans the affected areas before a termite treatment and again at the follow-up inspection after 30 days. Treated areas should have dried out by then, and the comparison records how the thermal and moisture conditions have changed. It’s documentation of the change, not a guarantee in itself, but it’s a great deal more than most owners are ever given.

Is a thermal imaging scan invasive?

No. A thermal scan requires no drilling, cutting or dismantling. Northern Rock does not drill, cut or dismantle building materials without the property owner’s written consent first.
