About mosquitos in the Northern Territory
Health authorities in the Northern Territory have urged residents to protect themselves from mosquito bites. Some mosquitoes in the Northern Territory carry and transmit the Murray Valley Encephalitis virus, which leads to brain inflammation and problems with the nervous system. There isn’t any vaccine available for this particular virus, which is why it’s so important to treat your property with mosquito repellents. Swamps and jungles surround certain areas around Darwin. When it rains, these swamps become breeding grounds for mosquitoes.
There are nearly 100 species of mosquitoes in the Northern Territory. Not all of them bite humans, though. Some species enter building or offices to find hosts. Others remain outdoors and feed on hosts either at dawn or dusk. Mosquitoes are known to transmit many infections like Dengue, Zika, and the Ross River Virus.
